Curso de Capacitación: ¿Cómo enseñar tu lengua nativa?

A pedido de personas interesadas, el lunes 8 de noviembre a horas 11 (GMT-3; 2PM GMT), se dará inicio al nuevo ciclo de capacitación para la enseñanza de Idiomas a extranjeros, conducido por la Mgter. Edith Luna Villanueva, con amplia experiencia en la capacitación de docentes de idiomas.
El curso de carácter teórico-práctico, tiene como objetivo preparar a aquellos nativos de un idioma que deseen enseñarlo (sea de modo presencial o en línea).
Se preveen 8 encuentros, dos días a la semana, según el siguiente cronograma.

Los encuentros son de 90' y se dictan en español a través de Skype.
Se acompaña de material y se solicita participación activa del asistente.
El costo, por encuentro, es de US$20 via paypal o Transferencia de Dinero.
Aunque es posible tomar encuentros aislados, se recomienda completar el ciclo.

how are you?
As some of you know, I am looking for volunteers to participate in a research which is not funded by any organization but will give way to a couple of academic papers and further research on online learning.
Its objective is to scketch some principles for the preparation of self-learning material for studying languages, particularly Spanish.
Volunteers are first sent a survey to see level, background, interests, needs, time available for study, etc and, after their answers, they are sent some material- part of a copyright one by the school of languages I am director of studies.
The material is accompanied by a questionnaire, and an active participants are sent another worksheet and so on and on.
The material chosen to be used in this study is Beginners (both true and false) and Pre-intermediate level (A1- A2), but if you know some Spanish, this can help you practice it or refresh it.
To participate, you need to be a non-native Spanish speaker.
Well, if you are interested in joining it or know someone who may be, let me know this week, please. Better if the person interested has no knowledge or scarce on Spanish language.

October special: COMUNICÁNDONOS Beginners Course for U$S50 a month

If you were thinking on taking a Spanish language course and were not able to join one yet for any reason, now, you can take the "Comunicándonos" Beginners (A1) Course for just U$S 50 a month.

Starting in October 13th in these time slots: 11AM GMT; 2pm GMT and 5pm GMT(*), the course will be developed during October, November and December, in twice-a-week classes.

You will join a small group with other learners whose source language is not Spanish and a native-Spanish-speaker tutor and we will gradually develop the contents of a communication- oriented syllabus that will enable you to communicate in the target language, Spanish, by the time you grasp the Spanish grammar.
After the course development you can take an optional level test.
Remember the course includes material Comunicándonos Principiantes Students' Worksheets and invitation to other Spanish South America activities

8 de Septiembre: Día de la Alfabetización

Alfabetizar es mucho más que enseñar a leer y escribir. El poder de cada persona reside en su capacidad de pensar y expresar sus ideas, lo cual convierte a este hecho en la piedra fundamental de toda sociedad comprometida con su realidad y su futuro.
Actualmente se nos plantean nuevos desafíos debido a que los avances tecnológicos han producido cambios radicales en diferentes sectores y la educación no es un ámbito ajeno. Es por eso que el concepto de alfabetización digital se encuentra hoy más que en nunca en boca de pedagogos.
Es cierto que no todos los componentes del mapa educativo (docentes, padres, alumnos) responden de la misma forma a las inquietudes con respecto al rol de la tecnología en el aula pero lo que seguramente comparten es el anhelo que el número de analfabetos tecnológicos disminuya con el tiempo.

Tanto a aquellos que hasta no hace tan poco nos mostraron las vocales en un pizarrón verde o a los que hoy lo hacen a través de una pizarra digital, a todos les agradecemos por igual y les pedimos que no dejen de ser agentes de cambio porque sin lectura no hay pensamiento, y sin pensamiento no hay libertad.

Reminder:
There are several Clubs where to practice all skills.
THIS club (CLub del Chiste or new suggestions) aims at developing ORAL PRACTICE, ORAL SKILLS which include pronunciation, fluent reading, speaking, questioning and answering, among other activities. Lexis and grammar are learnt and practiced in context and a fun atmosphere is a constant. To participate you need to have a Mid beginner level or plus, a microphone and headphones or speakers. Material is sent before the meeting to specially help those who are not good at improvising.
Club del chiste (Joke's club) have live meetings that last an hour and a half. They are weekly or every other week, on demand. Participation in meetings is paid in advanced ($5) and up to 5(five) people take part in each meeting to allow everyone actively participate.
Those interested, please suggest time slots for the dates metioned above, schedules you are sure you can make it (e.g. 4.30 -6pm GMT plus 7-8.30pmGMT). The more time slots you suggest, the more chances to meet other participants than the moderator;-)

ALFABETIZACIÓN BÁSICA, FUNCIONAL, DIGITAL Y CULTURAL: ENTRE CONCRECIONES, ASPIRACIONES Y DESCUIDOS EN LA ESCUELA

TEMÁTICA: Alfabetización y Educación Intercultural Bilingüe

PALABRAS CLAVE: alfabetizaciones, desafío, realidades, formación integral
ABSTRACT
La alfabetización ha sido reconocida como derecho humano y sinónimo de escolarización, la habilidad social, un medio que permite la comunicación, la autonomía personal y el empoderamiento. Esta se deriva de la satisfacción de ciertos retos en diferentes órdenes, lo cual determina diferentes tipos de alfabetización, variedades que representan el actual desafío educativo. No sólo el énfasis en su conceptualización primaria de leer y escribir, la alfabetización per se¸ o alfabetización básica, asegura el logro de los fines sociales e individuales complejos de la era actual. Ni la larga tradición devenida en tarea de alfabetizar que se iniciara en la formación en la escritura y la lectura, que luego incluyera a la formación en las lenguas extranjeras, y posteriormente a la atención a las necesidades de la era digital, cubre completamente el espectro de formación del ciudadano. Y mucho menos cuando los tiempos escolares, personales, políticos y sociales nos llevan a atender lo entendido como primordial o primario – nuevamente la alfabetización per se- llevando a la omisión, negligencia o descuido, fruto del planteo y replanteo de programas, métodos y estrategias de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Así, las necesidades de otras alfabetizaciones se filtran entre aristas, pliegues, sesgos, intersticios de una forma de alfabetización que aún no supera el grado de aspiración en muchas realidades provinciales. Puesto que, en lo que refiere a concreciones en las diferentes alfabetizaciones, veremos que estas se diferencian en grados, como es el ejemplo de la alfabetización básica a nivel nacional, donde mientras se enfatiza la alfabetización con programas para jóvenes y adultos, niños en edad escolar continúan abandonando el sistema, con un nivel de formación insuficiente para evitar una posible a analfabetización funcional. O el caso de la alfabetización digital como sueño de realidades perfectibles en escuelas donde o no hay computadoras, o no hay internet o no hay voluntad de uso; con docentes y futuros docentes aun reduciendo su uso tecnológico a lo estrictamente personal o de formación propia; con alumnos con necesidades básicas insatisfechas interfiriendo el normal desarrollo del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. O el marcado caso de insensibilización cultural, donde el diálogo entre culturas parece ser un desafío de otras sociedades, de los Otros de un ideario colonizado, otros que no somos ni están con nosotros.
La presente ponencia pretende centrar la atención en estos desafíos de las alfabetizaciones que, por una razón u otra, se ven forzadas a la invisibilidad, en realidades de aula de diferentes niveles y contextos. Propone pensarnos en situación de “aspiración” que represente una proposición más que crítica, un aporte y no una carencia, una reevaluación de las deudas internas, lo que nos debemos y olvidamos que debemos.

"Querida Iliana: That's true to many beginners, to prefer melodies they are familiar with and to recur to translations. Being familiar with and liking a particular song melody is 1 of the main reasons 4 being interested in lyrics in another language
Such a powerfull motivation! Now, in reference 2 learning from the experience w/out recurring 2 translation, students rely on their own strategies when not tutor-oriented, IMAGINATION being the most usual: relating a song 2 his own idea of the content out of the title, the melody, the video clip, the context of its author, etc.
All means are valid. Since music & the formula listen+sing+remember (with intermediate stages for general comprehension or more detailed understanding) DOES work!

I was preparing the class "Fútbol, Pasión de Multitudes" as the World Cup season seems to have started already and, to my surprise, after finding the Official song in its bilingual version (English and Spanish) I realized it had lost all its essence, since there is no mentioning to, for instance, famine, poverty, wars-i.e. reality in the poorest regions of Africa- which are part of K'naan's original message. So sad...

Learning from mistakes

¡Hola a todos! (hello everyone!)

I will take the chance to talk about LEARNING FROM MISTAKES.
There is a tendency in youngters and grown ups in my country - Argentina- to be a bit afraid of talking, trying, taking risks, participating when in language classes, probably because of a long tradition of being either "punished" or negatively criticized for making mistakes.
But the bottom line is that if learners don't try, take risks, experiment, work the language out, practice, produce in class first and out of class next, it will probably take them longer and it will be harder for them to suceed in learning.
So, once again, the piece of advice, for any language course attendee: do not worry about making mistakes, do worry about not learning from them

Día del Aborigen Americano
El continente americano celebra esta fecha en recuerdo de quienes habitaron originariamente este territorio, imprimiendo allí las primeras esencias culturales, y en desagravio por el maltrato y genocidio que desde tiempos remotos sufren todas las etnias originarias.
Los aborígenes americanos no pretenden privilegios por su condición de primeros habitantes del continente, sólo aspiran a que se los trate como iguales y se respete los valores de su cultura.
El 19 de abril de 1940 se celebró en Patzcuaro (México) el primer Congreso Indigenista Interamericano para una Conferencia Interamericana Indigenista, con el objetivo de salvaguardar y perpetuar las culturas aborígenes de todo el continente. Participaron indígenas representantes de poblaciones autóctonas de diversas regiones de América. Se habló de la situación social y económica de estos pueblos, de sus problemas y sus necesidades. Esta conferencia produjo un documento que creó el Instituto Indigenista Interamericano, con sede en esta ciudad de México y dependiente de la OEA. Así se instituyó el Día Americano del Indio, en conmemoración a este acontecimiento.
Desde entonces, el continente americano celebra esta fecha en recuerdo de quienes habitaron originariamente este territorio, imprimiendo allí las primeras esencias culturales.
Empobrecidos y relegados, los aborígenes americanos de hoy ya no pretenden privilegios por su condición de primeros habitantes del continente, sólo aspiran a que se los trate como iguales, que se les reconozca el derecho a la tierra donde habitan, igualdad de oportunidades laborales y de estudio y el respeto a los valores de sus culturas.
Argentina adhirió al documento de Patzcuaro e instituyó el 19 de abril en el año 1945, mediante el decreto del Poder Ejecutivo Nacional Nº 7550. Desde entonces, Argentina es miembro permanente y adhiere a esta fecha reivindicatoria de los derechos de los aborígenes.

Do you want to see how much Spanish do you know? Or are you new to this and want to try it out? Click on the title and see the notes and examples first.

When you the tutorial, probably you will be ready to say whether the following is VERDADERO (TRUE) o FALSO (FALSE). Have a go!

1. EL, LA, LOS and LAS are DEFINITE ARTICLES
2. UN, UNA are INDEFINITE - undertermined- ARTICLES used for the PLURAL
3. THE in English can be translated into Spanish as EL, LA, LOS or LAS
4. English undefinite article A is the equivalent to Spanish article LA

How did it go? Ready for another exercise? Choose the right option then. Good luck!

b. UN/UNOS auto participan en la carrera (some cars take part in the race)

Brief Overview to Past Tenses

Spanish past tenses: Preterit and Imperfect

Both, Spanish preterite (or preterit) and imperfect tenses are used to express past actions, but in English we have just one past tense. So, the English past form "I ate" could either be translated as "yo comí" (preterit) or "yo comía" (imperfect) depending on what we want to express (notice that they aren't interchangeable).

But how do we know when to use either the imperfect or the preterit tenses? In general terms, the preterit is used to express an action (in the past) that is completed or seen as completed, that has concrete and clear beginning and end. So, we use the other tense, the imperfect, as its name shows, when referring to actions that haven't got a clear or concise end.

We could also understand the preterit as a tense that give us specific information on when the action took place. On the other hand, the imperfect informs us generally about the end of the action.

Ok, let's go further; these are some 'tips' to help us with the use of both Spanish past tenses:

Use the preterit:


If you want to talk about something that just happened once:

Mi hijo nació el miércoles pasado (My son was born last Wednesday)
Ayer llamé a mi hermano (Yesterday I phoned my brother).


to tell when something began or ended.

La película comenzó a las siete y terminó a las ocho y media.
(The film started at seven o'clock and ended at half past eight.)

There are some words and expressions, indicating concrete time frames, so they are used with the preterit: ayer (yesterday) antesdeayer (the day before yesterday), en ese momento (at that moment), entonces (then) la semana pasada (last week), el mes pasado (last month), esta tarde (this evening) esta mañana (this morning).

Use the imperfect:
if you want to talk about repeated actions (or actions made habitually):

Ella comía arroz todos los días. (She aterice everyday)
Mi tía siempre llegaba tarde (My aunt was always late)
if you want to talk about time or age in the past:

Él tenía 20 años. (He was twenty years old)
Era medianoche. (It was midnight)

There are also some words and expressions that are used with the imperfect: cada día (every day), a veces (sometimes), de vez en cuando (from time to time), generalmente (usually). Mucho (a lot), siempre (always), nunca (never). These are expression that do not point to a specific point of time, that's why they are used with the imperfect tense.

This is a general view that can help you understand the main differences in use for these two Spanish tenses. In later lessons will specifically study these tenses, their uses and conjugations.

In this activity you have to fill in the blanks with the appropriate form of the verb (there are two suggestions from where to pick the right one)
It is for those who have some bare knowledge of Spanish Past tenses and it can be done in pairs or small groups.
Collaborative work is encouraged if the activity is tried out by a mixed group willing to learn from one another.

Aprendamos a través de la música

Desde niño siempre me gustaron los idiomas y, aunque estudié Ingeniería de Materiales, no descuidé mi inclinación por la música y el inglés.

Con el tiempo me di cuenta que, para aprender un nuevo idioma, primero es necesario conocer a fondo el tuyo...

También noté que la música que me gustaba oír en inglés era un excelente medio para aprender ese idioma. Con el nacimiento de Internet, buscaba rápidamente los vídeos y las letras de las canciones que me gustaba oír y comenzaba a interpretarlas.

Después de un tiempo comencé a ver vídeos en Youtube con la letra de esas canciones (Kareoke) y me di cuenta que aprendía rápido porque deseaba conocer que mensaje dejaban las canciones cuya melodía me gustaba.

Fue entonces cuando decidí difundir el conocimiento de mi idioma natal, el español, a través de canciones, tal como yo lo hice para aprender inglés.

Actualmente estoy aprendiendo francés y luego que culmine empezaré con un poco de italiano.

- Read the dialogue, then check on the references (after numbers) and little questions and finally try new dialogues!

B: Sí, cómo no (5). Hay una (6) a dos cuadras. Gire (7) a la derecha (8)en la próxima y la verá (9)
A: ¡Muchas gracias!

1. Buenos dias is one of the greetings. Remember the others?
2. Podría decirme = Could you tell me
3. dónde = where
4. Hay una parada de autobus: the reason for the conversation to have ever been started, looking for the bus stop. What other places can you be looking for? Which other a tourist may be interested in finding/needing to find?
5. Cómo no = claro= por supuesto: they show politeness and are adviced to follow "sí" in this situations.
6. "Una" here is a pronoun. Why do you think this was used and not "uno"?
